Alternative Medicine means any form of medicine that is outside the mainstream of western medicine.

Some of the very popular systems are Ayurveda, Acupuncture, Naturopathy, Yoga, Acupressure, Homeopathy, Aroma Therapy and many other methodologies.
Alternative medicines have generally been accepted in Asia and have gained more awareness and acceptance globally.
Patients are opting for these traditional systems of maintaining health, and for various treatments.
One of the most important reasons for this renewed interest is the increasing side effects and spiralling cost of western medicines.

Ayurveda – A life science is not just a medical system but a life science which aims not only treating diseases but also to promote a healthy life style and to prevent diseases.
Ayurveda has a concept of treating the cause of the Disease not the symptoms.

Ayurvedic treatment is generally customized to individual health requirements, illness treatments.

Symptoms of Obesity

  • Increased body fat
  • Breathlessness on exertion
  • Lethargy
  • Fatigue
  • Excessive sweating with bad odor

The thyroid gland acts as the body’s thermostat, controlling its basic tick-over speed.
Undiagnosed thyroid problems can be the underlying cause in many recurring or non-responsive health problems.
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland fails to function adequately, resulting in reduced levels of thyroid hormone in the body.
During childhood, hypothyroidism can cause retardation of normal growth.
There are many causes of hypothyroidism.
Iodine deficiency is the major possible cause in our country.
Some medical treatments, such as surgery or radiation to the thyroid gland, or certain drugs like lithium and phenylbutazone, may also induce the condition.

Failure of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus to stimulate the thyroid gland properly can cause a condition known as secondary hypothyroidism.
Some people with goitre (an enlargement of the thyroid gland) also have hypothyroidism.
Goitre can be caused by iodine deficiency, foods that contain goitre-causing substances, or other disorders that interfere with thyroid hormone production.

Sluggishness of bodily functions is the criterion for diagnosis.
Symptoms include depressed muscular activity, slow pulse, low blood pressure, hoarseness of voice, decreased immune functioning with recurrent infections, constipation, irritability, sensitivity to cold, depression, drooping and swollen eyes, swollen face, increase in allergic reaction, fatigue, weight gain, headaches, hair loss, lusterless hair, dry skin due to lack of perspiration, heavy and painful periods.

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which an overactive thyroid gland is producing an excessive amount of thyroid hormones that circulate in the blood. (“Hyper” means “over” in Greek).
Thyroid hormones include thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), representing 99.9% and 0.1% of thyroid hormones, respectively.
T3 is actually the most active thyroid hormone. Much of the T4 is converted to T3 in the bloodstream.

The thyroid itself is regulated by the pituitary gland in the brain.
The pituitary is further regulated by another gland in the brain, the hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus releases a hormone called thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), which sends a signal to the pituitary gland to release thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).
In turn, TSH sends a signal to the thyroid to release thyroid hormones.
With over activity of any of these three glands, an excessive amount of thyroid hormones can be produced, thereby resulting in hyperthyroidism.

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to make proper use of glucose, resulting in the condition of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).
Excess glucose in the blood ultimately results in high levels of glucose being present in the urine (glycosuria).
This increases the urine output, which leads to dehydration and increased thirst.
Glucose comes from the food we eat and is also made in liver and muscles.
The blood carries glucose to all the cells in our body.
Insulin, a chemical (or hormone) produced in the pancreas, is responsible for the uptake of glucose into cells for energy.
Decreased levels of insulin/ ineffective insulin affects this mechanism leading to increased glucose in the blood stream.
Factors that are often responsible for causing diabetes are
Excessive intake of foods which are difficult to digest, such as fried foods, creams, etc.
Lack of exercise,
Mental stress and strain,
Overeating and consequent obesity,
Excessive intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates,
Overloading of proteins and fats can also lead to diabetes.
Hereditary factors also play role in causing diabetes.

  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Blurred vision
  • Excessive sweating
  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive hunger
  • Frequent urination in large quantity

Ayurvedic View
In Ayurveda, Diabetes Mellitus is known as Madhumeha (Madhu means ‘honey’ and Meha means ‘urine’).
The other prime cause of Diabetes Mellitus is impaired digestion.
Impaired digestion leads to accumulation of specific digestive impurities which accumulate in the pancreatic cells and impair the production of insulin.
Ayurveda provides a holistic approach in managing diabetes disorder; this consists of therapies, medicines and dietary modification.
Madhumeha is classified as a Maha Rog (Major Disease) because, if not treated in time, it can lead to several complications in the body, including eye problems, joint pains, impotency, kidney failure, sexual and urologic problems, and more.

Panchakarma therapies are mainly aimed at cleansing, detoxing, purifying, strengthening and restoring balance to body and mind.
It helps to reverse the degenerative process in the body.
Panchkarma comprises five distinct therapeutic procedures.
Each procedure has an importance in our body which is explained in detail below.
The therapies could be all the five elements of the treatment or any of the combination along with other therapies.
Patients leave home after Panchakarma with an improved vigour and resume their normal activities with total confidence.

When there is congestion in the lungs causing repeated attacks of bronchitis, colds, cough or asthma, the Ayurvedic treatment is therapeutic vomiting, vamana, to eliminate the kapha causing the excess mucus.
Often times this also releases repressed emotions that have been held in the kapha areas of the lungs and stomach along with the accumulated dosha.
Once the mucus is released, the patient will feel instantly relieved.
It is likely that congestion, wheezing and breathlessness will disappear and that the sinuses will become clear.
Therapeutic vomiting is also indicated in chronic asthma, diabetes, chronic cold, lymphatic congestion, chronic indigestion and edema.
After vamana, resting, fasting, smoking certain herbal cigarettes, and not suppressing natural urges (i.e., urination, defecation, gas, sneezing, coughing) is recommended.
If vamana is administered properly, the person should feel relaxation in the lungs, will be able to breathe freely, will have lightness in the chest, clear thinking, a clear voice, a good appetite, and all symptoms of congestion disappear.

Virechana is the most famous in panchakarma treatments in ayurveda panchakarma treatment.
It is done by inducing purging in ‘pitha’ vitiated ailments like skin diseases and other impurity conditions of blood.
Virechana is the process of cleansing of the intestines which are pitta dominant through the use of laxative medicines.
It helps to remove the toxic and metabolic waste from liver, gallbladder and intestinal tract.
It does away with extra bile toxins from the middle zone of the body. Therefore, for many of the digestive ailments, people fall back to this form of discourse.
If addressed well by virechana, it neutralizes ulcers, gastritis, IBS, jaundice, kidney complaints, intestinal colic, and asthma.
Virechanam help reduce or heal fever, skin diseases, hematemesis, epistaxis, splenic disorders, worm infestation, anemia, headache, burning eyes, excessive lacrimation, chronic cough, rhinitis, gout, gynecological disorders, rheumatic conditions, anorexia.
While performing the Virechana karam, the vitiated doshas are eliminated through the rectum.
The drugs used for the purgation therapy are to vitiate the doshas and bring them into the abdomen.
During the procedure, the patient is subjected to Oleation (ingestion of medicated ghee, directly or mixed with recommended food) first, then Fomentation (Induced Sweating therapy ), which is followed by Emesis (induced vomiting) and Samsarjana Karma (diet control – post operative).
The internal Oleation is followed for three to seven days. Thereafter, a medicated steam bath is performed for three days.
A light and warm diet is prescribed for the patient, a day before starting Virechana karma in ayurveda panchakarma treatment.

Vata’s predominant site is the colon.
Ayurvedic basti (enema) involves the introduction into the rectum of herbal concoctions of sesame oil and certain herbal preparations in a liquid medium.
Basti is the most effective treatment for vata disorders, although many enemas over a prescribed period of time are usually required.
It relieves constipation, distention, chronic fever, cold, sexual disorders, kidney stones, heart pain, backache, sciatica and other pains in the joints.
Many other vata disorders such as arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscle spasms and headaches may also be treated with basti.
Vata is a very active principle in pathogenesis (disease).
If we can control vata through the use of basti, we have gone a long way in going to the root cause of the vast majority of diseases.
Vata is the main etiological factor in the manifestation of diseases.
It is the motive force behind the elimination and retention of feces, urine, bile and other excreta.
Vata is mainly located in the large intestine, but bone tissue (asthi dhatu) is also a site for vata.
Hence the medication administered rectally effects asthi dhatu.
The mucus membrane of the colon is related to the outer covering of the bones (periosteum), which nourishes the bones.

The nose is the doorway to the brain and it is also the doorway to consciousness.
The nasal administration of medication is called nasya.
An excess of bodily humors accumulated in the sinus, throat, nose or head areas is eliminated by means of the nearest possible opening, the nose.
Prana, life force as nerve energy, enters the body through the breath taken in through the nose.
Prana is in the brain and maintains sensory and motor functions.
Prana also governs mental activities, memory, concentration and intellectual activities.
Deranged prana creates defective functioning of all these activities and produces headaches, convulsions, loss of memory and reduced sensory perception.
Thus nasal administration, nasya, is indicated for prana disorders, sinus congestion, migraine headaches, convulsions and certain eye and ear problems.
Breathing also can be improved through nasal massage. For this treatment, the little finger is dipped into ghee and inserted into the nose.
The inner walls of the nose are slowly massaged, going as deeply as possible.
This treatment will help to open the emotions.
(Nose tissue is tender and for this application the fingernail must be kept short to avoid injuring the delicate mucus membranes.) Since most people have a deviated nasal septum, one side of the nose will be easier to penetrate and massage than the other.
The finger should not be inserted forcibly.
The massage should proceed by slow penetration, the finger moving first in a clockwise and then counter-clockwise direction.
By this means, the emotions that are blocked in the respiratory tract will be released.
One may use this treatment each morning and evening.
In this way, breathing patterns will change as the emotions are released and the eyesight also will improve.

Toxins present in the gastrointestinal tract are absorbed into the blood and circulated throughout the body.
This condition is called toxemia, which is the basic cause of repeated infections, hypertension and certain other circulatory conditions.
This includes repeated attacks of skin disorders such as urticaria, rashes, herpes, eczema, acne, scabies, leukoderma, chronic itching or hives.
In such conditions, along with internal medication, elimination of the toxins and purification of the blood is necessary.
Rakta moksha is also indicated for cases of enlarged liver, spleen and gout.
Pitta is produced from the disintegrated red blood cells in the liver.
So pitta and blood have a very close relationship.
An increase in pitta may go into the blood causing toxicity, and thus many pitta-genic disorders.
Extracting a small amount of blood from a vein relieves the tension created by the pitta-genic toxins in the blood.
Bloodletting also stimulates the spleen to produce anti-toxic substances that help to stimulate the immune system.
Toxins are neutralized, enabling radical cures in many blood-borne disorders.
Certain substances such as sugar, salt, yogurt, sour tasting foods and alcohol are toxic to the blood.
In certain blood disorders these substances should be avoided to keep the blood pure.
For rakta moksha treatment other than bloodletting, there are blood purifying practices involving herbs, gem therapy or color water therapy.
For any rakta moksha treatment or related alternative treatment, it is beneficial to refrain from yogurt, salt, sugar, alcohol, marijuana, sour and fermented foods.
